What is asynchronous audio creation?

The term asynchronous refers to something not occurring at the same time or speed.

To give you an example, during the COVID-19 pandemic many students transitioned to virtual learning. Given this context, asynchronous refers to learning methods that let students work at their own pace, instead of learning synchronously in a classroom.

Asynchronous podcast production is a new audio format. The host of a conversation sends a series of questions to their guest, which the guest records answers to in their own time. The podcast host can then combine the audio clips into a single file, and publish this as a podcast.

But how is this new way of creating audio content beneficial to the host or guest? And what are the risks?

Advantages and disadvantages of recording asynchronously

As already mentioned, asynchronous audio creation allows host and guest to record and answer in their own time. This is not only time-saving, as there is no need to schedule a specific time and place, but it also takes away a lot of pressure for everyone involved.

Guests, as well as hosts, can record the podcast from the comfort of their own home, at their convenience. This often results in better informed answers, increasing the value of the content provided.

Asynchronous podcasting is also time-saving regarding the aspect of production. It captures audio with less effort, making the whole podcasting process more enjoyable.

Moreover, the questions can be sent to multiple guests, providing the audience with a variety of perspectives and opinions on the issue.

Overall, asynchronous audio creation is very inclusive. Physically disabled people can participate in interviews by using speech synthesis.

It additionally helps overcome any kind of language barrier, as questions and answers can be translated into multiple languages.

However, some argue that hosting an interview asynchronously might not sound as natural as a face-to-face conversation would. While it is beneficial that the guest can think about their answers thoroughly, there’s an increased risk of the participants sounding scripted and forced.

Direct interaction is not possible in asynchronous interviews.

Advantages and disadvantages of live recording

Social interactions are increasingly becoming more distant, caused by the rise of new technologies. Face-to-face interviews are not only enjoyable for guest and host, but they also appeal to the audience as the conversation seems natural and spontaneous.

Furthermore, the aspect of body language plays an important role during an interview. Based on non-verbal cues, the host and guest can adjust what tone of voice or what language they're using, and tell how the other person is feeling.

People are generally more empathetic, engaged and collaborative in face-to-face settings.

However, finding a time to record the interview can be difficult, particularly if you're trying to interview someone who is very busy. You need to work according to other people’s schedules, that's why you need to be flexible and ready to adapt your schedule at short notice. Consequently, it might be hard to publish content consistently, which is essential in order to create a loyal podcast audience. In other words, your fate is in your guest’s hands.

Summary

Taking into account all the aspects mentioned above, we can agree that hosting a live interview, and recording one asynchronously, both offer benefits and risks that should be taken into consideration.

If asynchronous audio creation is conducted correctly, creating a natural conversation flow, it can serve perfectly well as an alternative to the traditional face-to-face interview. Recording interviews asynchronously not only increases content quality, but requires less time and helps grow the podcasting community by being more inclusive.

Today, asynchronous interviews are a viable alternative to live interviews, which podcasters may want to consider in order to consistently provide their audience with valuable audio content.
